My plan for summer sewing is to try and make things that are more intermixable and adaptable. The need for this has been highlighted by the Me made May challange as I find so few of my makes really go together! I have a habit of just making random items I like the look of.
I have a few shirt patterns in my collection so thought that would be a good start, plus if I made a little longer they could be worn as a dress or with leggings to give more looks. That’s where practical me moved over, with a visit to see Adam Ant in concert coming up i started to see long flowing cuffs & neck frills to wear under a military style jacket.
No I wouldn’t be wearing that on a normal working day….those cuffs would get soggy shampooing hair… so I managed to tame my thoughts!
I decided on Simplicity 2255 view A but then added the neck frill of view C too.
The fabric I used was a bargain that I picked up a couple years ago for £1 mtr. I’m not sure of its content but it has a nice drapy feel with soft gold finish.
The make came together easily and I used my overlocker to do a rolled hem on the curved bottom & sleeves.
The only change I made was to sew elastic to the inside a few inches up from the sleeve edge so it gripped the arm & gave a slight flouncy cuff.
I wore it to the concert with shiny trousers & over knee boots but can also imagine it tucked into a pencil skirt. I think maybe I should have added just a little more length to wear as a dress so will note that for next time.
Looks more like I’m in a performance of “singing in the rain” before we went in😃
Hope your all enjoying your weekend. It’s been a couple weeks since I last did a Sunday Sevens so here is a quick catch up with what I’ve been doing when I haven’t been working or sewing!
A walk along the river Thames at Kingston of course included a tea stop & as we sat drinking this Heron landed on the bank just feet away from us.
I’ve been getting back into doing lots of walking but no running at all so my Christmas pressie (from a friend😕!) of entry into a 10k was passed over to Mr B. I went along to watch him cross the finish line.
We have had very mixed weather so on a nice day I took the chance to walk along Plymouth Hoe.
The other days of rain have ment the rivers here are swollen with the water running off the moors.
It was a rainy day on a day out with my mum, daughter & grandkiddies so we had to dodge the showers by going into a lovely cafe where they did a whole selection of hot chocolates & milkshakes topped with almost everything you can think of! This ones was my daughters popcorn & caramel hot chocolate
We had to walk off a few calories so strolled around the Barbican. It had been the Pirate weekend so some tall ships were still there.
Finally my last pic if from another Christmas Pressie. Mr B had bought me tickets to see Adam Ant in the Royal Albert Hall, a place I’d mentioned I’d love to go to. So I donned my newly made frilly shirt but decided against the white stripe across my face that I had often worn out in my teenage years! It was a fantastic night. The venue was as grand as I’d expected & we were stood only feet away from the stage😀
Over the last few years I have followed those taking part in the challange but never felt I had enough me made items. If you haven’t heard about it or would also like to join in, you can find all the details here.
Well this year I’m going to give it a go in an attempt to look at what I have actually got and where there are holes in my wardrobe!
I do tend to make items randomly; things I’ve seen that I like or want for a particular outing. So with this challange I want to try bring outfits together and see what I need to make to co-ordinate with what I already have.
‘I, Nicky, sign up as a participant of Me-Made-May ’17. I endeavour to wear something I have made or altered/refashioned each day for the duration of May 2017’
Here’s hoping I manage to seek out all those forgotten pieces as well as my favourites to manage this. I will attempt to put a pics on instagram, sewandsnip, and do a round up on here along the way😃
