Festival time

This year we were lucky enough to get tickets for Glastonbury so had to make something to mark the occasion!

My friend Linda was also going & she does like a T-shirt (I can imagine her laughing as she reads this as it’s an ongoing joke) so decided on making her something for her birthday.

I happened to come across this great Free vest pattern a little while ago & as the weather was actually forecast to be sunny I thought I’d give it a go. With just 2 pattern pieces & straps made from the elastic edging it was a relatively quick make. I hadn’t used fold over elastic before so practiced with some off cuts first but it was easier than I expected.

This Fabric just said festival to me so decided I had to have a matching top too!

Just so we didn’t forget where we were i added some embroidery on the back.

I wasn’t sure how my embroidery machine would work on a stretch fabric but using a dissolvable interfacing it worked perfectly and once soaked in water this disappeared so the fabric could still stretch between the lettering.

We had a great time. Now it’s over & we’re back home but hopefully every time these vests get worn it will be a little reminder of the fun we all had😃

Me Made May 17 results!

It was a close call but I actually managed to wear st least one thing I’d made everyday during May😃 I even managed to get a pic of them all & post on Instagram (unfortunately I didn’t save them to include here so this post is very wordy!)

So I’ll just share the numbers instead:- 13 tops, 7 dresses, 6 waistcoats, 5 skirts, 2 jackets, 1 pair of trousers & a bag!!

This round up have really highlights what I though was wrong with my me made wardrobe….it’s very top heavy!

I love pencil skirts & they are straightforward to make so why have I got only 3 me made ones???

I regularly wear trousers but lounge pants are the only ones I’ve made.

I wouldn’t say I was a dress wearer but there were more than I expected in my list. Some  of these had been made for particular occasions and had been hiding in my wardrobe since so it was good to bring them out.

The challenge has really confirmed that I sew erratically, not really thinking about co-ordinating with the rest of my wardrobe.

So how will this effect my future sewing. Well I’m already thinking that by next May I want to have more of a capsule wardrobe. Pieces that work together in a variety of ways.

Not sure the 3 tops I’ve just made & the dress I’ve cut out are working towards that yet but, oh well another 10 months of sewing to work on it😃

Sunday Sevens 24

With the events that have been happening so close to home over the past weeks it shows how precious life is.  The pic above is the beautiful sky above the Thames in Surrey last night. Less than an hour later the terrible events further up the river changed so many lives forever.

We can’t let the bad few rule the love and compassion of the many. So many of the emergency services & members of the public have shown so much courage.

I have chosen that I need to try to carry on as normal so here’s my Sunday Seven

We have been making changes at our salon so our retail area now stocks lots of jewellery & displays a few items of the fashion range from a neighbouring business. Hopefully in the future I’ll add some of my own makes.

One of my clients Is an artist & invited us to a gallery open evening in Dartmouth to see her work. I loved it but forgot to take a pic☹️ I was distracted by the free wine but the theme of the exhibition was Trees. So many amazing pieces but if you would like to take a look at the work we went to see then please take a look at  Sarah‘s instagram. After the viewing we sat & ate fish & chips by the water

We are off to Glastonbury in a few weeks & this time we are staying in a tent😱 so we thought be better test first!

The garden is looking a little overgrown at the moment but there are still some beautiful flowers

I haven’t run since December but today felt like the day to start again. After parking & walking to Hampton Court Palace we went along the Thames Path. Mr B ran & I ran/walked for the 4 miles to Kingston. Saw this duck proudly sitting in its nest!

Actually it wasn’t as bad as I expected…maybe that’s because I knew there was a fabric shop at the end.

Shopping complete it was time to walk back, stopping for a selfie on Kingston Bridge.

And back to out reward of tea & cake at the Lock Keepers Cafe. I must have walked/run the calories before I ate it mustn’t I?? 😃

Laminaria Swimsuit

A couple months ago I was excitedly given the chance to pattern test a swim suit for Seamstress Erin Designs

The new Laminaria is a fully lined one piece with various design options for the neckline, straps and inset panel.

I have never sewn anything in swimsuit fabric so decided to go for the plain option with a v neck and halter neck strap.

It’s a pdf pattern so you can get printing straight away! The instructions were very clear with plenty of pictures and a great description on selecting the correct size to get the perfect fit.

Normally I’m terrible for not taking much notice of the instructions so pattern testing really makes me slow down & remember how important it is; reading each stage to make sure it’s clear for others to follow too.

I found the make straightforward and everything was going wel until I turned the elastic & topstitched in place. I used my machine stretch stitch, as I had when attaching the elastic, but this time it wasn’t playing ball😡 I had back looping everywhere.

Not to be beaten I unpicked it all & repeated the step with a zigzag stitch instead.

I’m really happy with my finished suit and think this pattern is a great style. It’s lower leg provides great coverage and the variations give you the option for a whole suitcase full of different swimsuits for your next holiday😂 All the pattern testers came up with fantastic examples that can also be seen on Erin’s blog.

Having made this version it’s given me the confidence to do more. I’m no longer scared of this fabric and have 2 others planned.

Unfortunately haven’t made it to the beach yet so no scenic photoshoot!
